Il fait partie de la tradition de cuisine de la famille qui a commencé avec ma mère qui a déjà utilisé ce livre. L'original reste aujourd'hui avec ma petite soeur. J'ai reçu ce même livre dans une version plus récente, en cadeau de mariage de la part de mon petit frère il y a 44 ans.</p> <p>Je ne consulte pas le livre souvent, mais mon mari s'en sert parfois. Le livre contient de grands classiques de recettes traditionnelles, comme le Pot-au-Feu, la Pâte Brisée ou le Baba au Rhum. C'est un peu sentimental, cette tradition de famille qui a commencé avec ma mère et qui s'arrêtera avec moi probablement. When I was in grade 4 of elementary school and around 10 years old, I made two hand-stitched pillow covers. In Afghanistan, they are traditionally placed over pillows as a decorative item. I would first draw my motif on paper, and then transfer it to the fabric, where I would re-stitch the motif using threads of different colors. It turned out that my piece was done so perfectly that it was considered the best work in the whole school, and even won me prizes. I was happy and proud of my achievement, and it encouraged me a lot later in life. When I opened my private clinic in Kabul later on, I decorated the walls with the stitching works from my childhood by framing them, which created a happy atmosphere for me. When the war started, my clinic was affected when, following a missile strike, all the windows exploded. Luckily, I was not there at the time of the bombing. I came in the day after to pick up my medical diploma from the wall, which is of major importance to me. While I took it, I saw the two stitching works next to it, which were pierced by bits of broken glass, as was the diploma. I put the diploma and handicraft works into my purse. Shortly after, I fled the war from Afghanistan just carrying my purse. At that moment, I had totally forgotten about the stitching works, which were still in my purse, and was very happy when I found them in there later on. Before coming to Canada, I lived in Pakistan for one year, and in Iran for 10 years. Now, I use the hand-stitched pillow covers on top of a pillow, instead of framed as they were in my clinic at the time, so as not to be reminded of the bombing. Je l’ai amené avec moi quand je suis arrivé à Montréal en août 2001. J’y tiens comme à la prunelle de mes yeux puisqu’il représente la réalisation du rêve de ma vie : j’ai été piqué par la Jacksonmania en 1988, lorsqu’il était sur le toit du monde. J’avais 10 ans, vivais loin de tout et n’osais même pas imaginer de pouvoir l’apercevoir un jour. Depuis novembre 1991, date de sa première parution, je courais tous les 3 mois chez le marchand de journaux chercher le nouveau numéro de ce magazine qui me passionnait. C’était à New York, le 7 novembre 2001, après avoir passé la nuit sur le trottoir pour obtenir une signature sur son nouvel album Invincible. On était plus de 3000 fans à attendre, 500 ont pu rentrer, une poignée se faire signer autre chose que le disque. Et 3 seulement ont pu rester pendant toute la séance, assis proche de lui avec sa maquilleuse. Avec 2 amis, nous avons eu cette chance inouïe. Je voulais qu’il me signe cette photo que j’adore avec son fils, et j’espérais qu’elle attirerait son attention. J’avais vu juste mais le risque était qu’il veuille la garder : à la fin de la séance j’ai pu de nouveau l’approcher, lui parler et obtenir l’un de ses plus beaux autographes. Il me l’a personnalisé à sa façon : mon nom est Pierre mais mon accent l’a conduit à m’appeler Pia… Ma vie n’aurait jamais été la même sans Michael Jackson, je sais la chance d’avoir vécu à son époque et je suis fier d’avoir su l’apprécier à sa juste valeur. C'est le roman « Les Fleurs Bleues » de Raymond Queneau qui me rappelle une personne importante disparue dans ma vie. Il appartenait à ma mère, qui est morte quand j'avais 10 ans. Quand j'avais entre 15 et 18 ans j'ai lu ce livre pour la première fois. J'ai pu découvrir Queneau, et dans ce livre particulièrement, la notion de rapport au temps. L'histoire présente en effet deux personnages vivant à des époques différentes qui rêvent l'un de l'autre. Depuis, je l'ai relu avec un intérêt supplémentaire: celui de tenter de rencontrer un peu plus ma mère. Je le relis de temps en temps en portant une importance particulière à des traces que ma mère a laissées sur certaines pages qu'elle a lues et étudiées. Surlignage, mots entourés, notes en marge (compréhensibles ou non) donnent un autre niveau de lecture à ce roman, même si tous ces gribouillages ne sont pas toujours déchiffrables et compréhensibles. Lors du déménagement de la France vers La Réunion quand j'avais autour de dix ans, on ne pouvait apporter que très peu de choses et on a du abandonner des albums photo de famille entiers. À ce moment, j'ai pris en ma possession ce cadre tout en le cachant. Plus tard, quand mon père l'a découvert, il m'a dit que je pouvais le garder. Avant de quitter La Réunion pour aller vivre au Canada, j'ai retrouvé cet objet et je l'ai apporté ici. Quand je regarde les photos je ne pense pas seulement à mes parents, mais aussi à moi. J'ai l'impression d'être eux en ce-moment, bien que je suis déjà plus âgé qu'eux sur la photo. J'ai rangé le cadre photo chez moi, je ne l'ai même pas posé. Each of them is connected to a particular story that happened in different places and time; at some point they have found me to become part of my memories. I received the glass frog family during a beautiful trip with my sister to the sea. The duck reminds me of the time I spent in India; I found it in a Kinder chocolate egg. The argyle figurine, which originally contained Cachaça, was given to me by a designer friend who often travels to Brazil. The glass penguin was given to me by an Argentinian friend. Il appartenait à l'époque à ma grand-mère, qui l'a donné par la suite à ma mère, avant de se retrouver avec moi à Montréal. On l'appelle Tass ou Lave-main traditionnel. Il est fait en argent, sculpté à la main, il date de 1965 et provient de la ville de Fes, au Maroc, connue pour son artisanat et ses objets anciens et traditionnels. A l'époque, les lave-mains étaient utilisés au quotidien, il n'y avait pas de lavabos, et les gens ne se levaient pas de table, avant et après avoir mangé, on faisait tourner le Tass auprès de chaque personne, on pouvait poser un savon au milieu et de l'eau dans la petite bouilloire ainsi qu'une serviette à main qu'on tenait au bras. Ce lave-main qui est devenu par la suite un objet de prestige à cause de ses sculptures et de sa fabrication, a aussi été utilisé dans des occasions spéciales, pour les grandes cérémonies, et on évitait ainsi de déplacer les personnes âgées autour de la table. Aujourd'hui, il a sa place dans mon salon avec d'autres objets marocains, il me rappelle la famille, la tradition et les grandes tablées. Before leaving for Montreal, we spent some time in a restaurant where this guitar was part of the wall decoration. My mom liked the idea of offering me this beautiful object as a souvenir, and convinced the restaurant owner to part with it by giving him more tips than it is custom. The guitar reminds me of this specific moment I spent with my mother. It is also a symbol of leaving for Canada. It belongs to Montreal for me; I therefore do not feel the need to bring it anywhere else. When I left the country for more than a year, I stored it here in Montreal. In Mexico, it is a common habit to give and receive objects to/from people who are dear to you. Its decorations are typical for South Brazil (and therefore Urugay and Argentine as well). In Brazil, it is very common to see people carrying their Mate teacup and a thermos with them. They share their drink with others and use it as an excuse to be together, to socialize at anytime, anyplace. While in Brazil this is a common thing that happens naturally, here in Canada I have to force myself to keep up with the habit as I am all by myself in doing so. It connects me to the people here as well. When they see me with my cup and thermos they are curious. From there we start talking about Mate and my country and get into things like tradition; I even get them to share about themselves as well. Drinking Mate also helps me to connect with myself, and keeps me awake during difficult periods of study. I believe that you can tell a lot about someone's identity and self-expression just by the way they drink Mate. Pendant ce temps elle fabriquait des paniers utilitaires fait de la ronce de toute tailles qui servaient pour aller cueillir des haricots dans le potager, chercher les oeufs dans le poulailler, des pommes dans le cellier, etc. Le panier me rappelle aujourd'hui ma grand-mère que j'adorais comme tout. Je m'aperçois aussi de la chance que j'ai eu d'avoir connue ces gens pauvres du milieu rural. Ce monde qui a disparu ne représente pas seulement un univers en contraste avec ma condition de citadine mais surtout un monde qui a réellement disparu en France. Tout ce petit monde de paysans qui vivaient avec un petit bout de terre, sans chauffage, sans cuisinière, avec une seule ampoule électrique et une seule pièce. Tout se faisait dans la même pièce qui servait de chambre, de salle à manger, de cuisine et de "salle de bains" (on se lavait au seul robinet de la maison ou dehors, dans le lavoir). Il y avait bien un étage mais il servait à remiser les récoltes de céréales, le blé qu'on coupait encore à la main, à la faux, en crachant dans ses mains, entre deux gorgées de cidre, et qu'on rentrait à la brouette (ils n'avaient pas de tracteur). The family traveled through Bulgaria to Italy before embarking on a ship from Italy to Montreal. They must have bought the mandolin in Italy, as the label inside the instrument states "Casa Musicale R. Maurri, Firenze". During the ship voyage of 22 to25 days, she remembered her father playing the mandolin and herself dancing to it, or playing the mandolin herself. The back of the mandolin is slightly damaged due to rough conditions during the trip. In the winter of 2009, during a snowstorm, she brought the mandolin to the owner of her local alteration shop, and asked him to keep her mandolin safe for her. A few months later, Anitchka passed away at the age of 90. earlier, an antique piece that I acquired in my teens at some flea market in Germany, some 20 odd years ago. It has multiple meanings for me: I find it a very beautiful, meticulously worked object that shows my interest in antique things linked to some kind of design culture. It also reminds me of my teens, when I enjoyed looking for unique objects at flea markets. The hole-punch, especially this two hole-punch, is also a very practical thing. My father gave it to me as a gift when I was 10 years old, in Istanbul, Turkey. I still have a passion for chess today. Every time I play a casual game on it, I am reminded of its history and my introduction to chess. The chess game continues to help me to learn how to focus myself better. I try to draw some parallels between the game elements and life, and amuse myself by applying them to ordinary things.
